In 2011, Christian M’Pumbu became Bellator’s first light heavyweight champion with three consecutive TKO victories over Chris Davis, Tim Carpenter, and Richard Hale. M’Pumbu also became the first Bellator champion to lose a non-title fight, dropping a unanimous decision to Travis Wiuff at Bellator 55.

Attila Vegh had an interesting run in last season’s 205-pound tournament, to earn a shot at a Bellator world title. Vegh impressed in the opening round, earning a rear naked choke victory at the one-minute mark against Zelg Galesic. He then won a controversial split decision against Emanuel Newton, a fight many believe Newton earned the victory. In the finale, Vegh left no doubt, knocking out Travis Wiuff in just 25-seconds in the first round.
