UFC welterweight champion, Georges St Pierre, made it official in a conference call today that he is taking an indefinite leave of absence from mixed martial arts and will be vacating his title that he’s held since April of 2008.

Johny Hendricks will get another shot at becoming the #1 170-pound fighter in the world, following a razor-thin split decision loss to St. Pierre at UFC 167. The loss snapped a six-fight win streak against some of the top fighters in the UFC’s welterweight division, including Carlos Condit, Martin Kampann, and Jon Fitch.

In one of 2013’s best stories, Robbie Lawler’s career resurgence continued at UFC 167 with a split decision victory over Rory MacDonald. He went 3-0 this year in the UFC, with key victories over Bobby Voelker and Josh Koscheck.

With a new headliner for UFC 171, the previously booked match-up between Jon Jones and Glover Teixeira has been moved once again to UFC 172. Though not official, UFC 172 is expected to take place on April 14th, 2014. No city or venue has been determined yet.

With a unanimous decision win over Nick Diaz at UFC 158, Georges St Pierre extended his winning streak to eleven. He regained his UFC welterweight belt in April 2008, and has since defended it eight times, including wins over BJ Penn, Jon Fitch, and Carlos Condit.  This will be St Pierre’s first fight outside of Canada since March of 2010, when he defeated Dan Hardy in Newark, New Jersey.

Johny Hendricks left no doubt for the choice who the next welterweight title challenger would be, with a unanimous decision victory over Carlos Condit at UFC 158. With the win, he’s now won six-straight fights in the UFC, putting together an impressive resume with victories over Josh Koscheck, Jon Fitch, and Martin Kampmann.

The greatest welterweight in mixed martial arts history, Georges St Pierre returned from a torn ACL last November and earned a unanimous decision over Carlos Condit at UFC 154. The win was his ninth successful title defense in a row, including victories over BJ Penn, Jon Fitch, and Jake Shields.

Thanks to his rabid fan base and Georges St Pierre’s general dislike for the man, Nick Diaz gets a rare title shot on the heels of a loss. Last time out, Diaz lost a unanimous decision to Carlos Condit at UFC 143. The loss snapped a eleven-fight win streak, dating back to May of 2008. After the Condit fight, Diaz tested positive to marijuana metabolites and received a year-long suspension.
