Benson Henderson returns for the first time since losing the UFC’s lightweight belt to Anthony Pettis at UFC 164, submitting to an armbar in the first round. The loss snapped a seven-fight win streak to begin his UFC career, following the UFC/WEC merger. Henderson won the 155-pound strap in February of 2012 and defended it three times before losing to Pettis.

Josh Thomson made his return to the UFC at UFC on FOX 7, stopping Nate Diaz in the second round via TKO. He’s won two of his last three fights, with his only defeat coming against former Strikeforce champion, Gilbert Melendez by a razor-thin split decision. Thompson was booked to fight Anthony Pettis at UFC on FOX 9, but a lingering injury to the champ forced him out of the bout.

Nate Diaz’s bid to become UFC lightweight champion fell short, dropping a unanimous decision to Ben Henderson at UFC on FOX 5. The loss snapped a three-fight win streak, which included submission victories over Takanori Gomi and Jim Miller.

Strikeforce transfer, Josh Thomson hasn’t seen action since May of last year when he lost another decision (this time a split) to champion and rival, Gilbert Melendez. His last win was a unanimous decision victory over KJ Noons at Strikeforce: Tate vs Rousey.

Gilbert Melendez Injured; Strikeforce: Melendez vs Healy Cancelled

For the second time in three cards, a Zuffa event has been cancelled due to an injury in the main event.

Strikeforce lightweight champion, Gilbert Melendez has been forced out of his headlining bout with Pat Healy because of an undisclosed injury suffered while training. It was Showtime’s decision to not broadcast the rest of the card, without Melendez in the main event.

“When Showtime informed us that it would not be airing the event, we made the difficult decision to cancel Saturday’s card in Sacramento,” Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker stated. “Without a television partner, we simply could not move forward with this event. We wish Gilbert a speedy recovery and will work diligently and quickly to reschedule the fighters affected by this news on upcoming cards.”

It is rumored that former champion Josh Thomson, offered to step up and face Healy for a number one contender’s bout, but was turned down either by Strikeforce or Showtime. There is no information on if the other nine bouts on the card will be moved to a later date or scrapped all together.
