Saad Awad returns to a Bellator tournament semifinal after a first round submission victory over Martin Stapleton at Bellator 101. Last season, Awad was a late replacement into the tournament, but defeated Guillaume DeLorenzi and Will Brooks to make it to the tournament finals, but lost to David Rickels by second round TKO.

Will Brooks gets the opportunity to rematch Saad Awad, the guy who eliminated him in the semifinals of last season’s tournament, thanks to a dominant unanimous decision victory over John Alessio in the quarterfinals. Brooks has now won two fights in a row since losing to Awad in February of this year, also getting a TKO victory over Chris Leyva at Bellator 97.

Alexander Sarnavskiy advanced to the semifinals with a quick first round submission victory over UFC-veteran Marcus Davis in the tournament’s opening round. He’s now won four straight fights since losing to Rich Clementi by split decision back in October of last year,in season seven’s lightweight tourney.

Ricardo Tirloni was a late replacement for injured Rob Sinclair, but still defeated Rich Clementi by unanimous decision to advance to the next round of this year’s 155-pound tournament. The win snapped two-fight losing steak, decision losses Dave Jansen and Will Brooks.

Like many MMA fighters, Rich Clementi returns to action in less than a year following a retirement announcement after his submission loss to Marcin Held in the semifinals of season seven’s tournament. Clementi looked like his younger self in his quarterfinal match-up with Alexander Sarnavskiy, earning the upset split decision victory.

With a knee injury forcing Rob Sinclair out of this year’s lightweight tournament, three-time tournament veteran, Ricardo Tirloni will take his place. He made quarterfinal exits in season six and eight, losing to Rick Hawn and Will Brooks respectively. Tirloni advanced to the semifinals in season seven’s lightweight tournament with a submission win over Rene Nazare, but was eliminated by Dave Jansen in the semifinals via decision.
